DIY Dropcloth Slipcover

We seem to have ottomans coming out of our ears around here, but unfortunately, not all of them are super cute! ;) So I'm all about recycling them into usable pieces, like I did here with an old ottoman and a scrap piece of dropcloth!

It took me about a hour and a half to hand sew this, so for those of you with sewing machines, we are talking about a 20 minute update! If you've got a little fabric and a few minutes, you could create this projects, here's how.

Materials:

  • Dropcloth or fabric
  • Straigh tpins
  • Measuring tape
  • Needle and Thread or Sewing Machine
  • Iron

First, iron your fabric. Then you want to drape your material over the ottoman, smoothing out any wrinkles.

At each of the four corners, you will will pinch the fabric together and insert straight pins to hold the pieces together. Tip, it will help a lot to insert the pins as straight as possible, so that when you sew, it will be a breeze.

Once the corners are pinned, you can pin the hem. I sued a measuring tape to ensure the hem was straight all the way around the furniture piece. Once each of the four sides and hem are pinned you can flip the cover inside out and begin sewing just inside the straight pins line.

Now you can turn the cover right side out and insert it over your footstool! Such a simple sewing project. I waited for over a year to tackle this little DIY, just waiting for a sewing machine. But in one fed up afternoon, I did the whole thing by and and it barely took the length of a movie to complete.

The moral of the story, that you can do things you think will be hard. Just get out there and tackle it! The second moral of the story, learn to sew, it will save you time! ;)

And if you're looking for more ottoman inspiration, here's another ottoman transformation from last year, DIY Ballard Designs Tufted Ottoman.

I hope you're out there getting crafty my friends! If you follow me on Instagram- you know I'm in the Northwest this week for my business! Wish me luck and Happy Memorial Day!!
