Hola, my earth friendly DIY'ers! After inventing an all natural wood stain, I started thinking about other products I could improve upon, things that would be kinder to Mother Earth. Here in Utah, we suffer with hard water issues because our H20 is way mineral rich. When I lived in Boston, laundry detergent was a constant source of grey water.
In this post, I thought a good way to do my part would be to create a fabric softener that would be cheaper and have fewer water hardeners than regular detergent. I'm trying my hardest not to go hippy, but its so gosh darn difficult not to take the little steps that make a better tomorrow...
or whatever !
Making Fabric Softener is so stinkin' easy, you'll be asking yourself why you didn't do it sooner! You need three things:
Hot Water, White Distilled Vinegar, & Hair Conditioner. Just follow this easy recipe and you'll be making the earth proud with your own fabric softener. I made a label for ya'll, it fits into the series of cleaners DIY andI use, so follow along and build your own collection of cleaners. You can drag this pic onto your desktop or click here to download your Fabric Softener Label ~ for free.
First, you should warm 3 cups of water in the microwave [or on the stovetop] until it's all steamy.
Next, you should add 1 cup of distilled white vinegar.
I used a whisk to incorporate 1/3 cup of conditioner. You want yo use 2 tbsp per load, which means I pay .01-.02 cents per load depending on the conditioner you use! For this project I used Paul Mitchell Super Skinny, because I love the fresh apple-y scent. But you can use whatever you have on hand, the cheaper your conditioner, the lower the price point of your new fabric softener. You'll be saving big time!
This whole project took less than five minutes AND it makes the environment happier, which in turn rocks my world! I used a recycled glass jar for this product, following the steps I outline in this post. Now all of my jars match in a not very matchy sort of way!
Here's a few posts that you may like about al natural cleaners!
As for our travel update, we just traveled through Utah, Idaho and are now enjoying Washington. It's one of the prettiest places on earth, I think. You wouldn't believe the coast, when the fog rolls in and the waves are crashing...it's out of this world! I have daily updates to my social media stream, link up with me to keep posted. :-)
What are you making this week? Do you have any favorite cleaning recipes? Do share!!
