A Week from Thursday: White Hot Chocolate with Homemade Whipped Cream

Hi everyone! It’s Heidi from A Week from Thursday. As a craftaholic and foodie, I blog about DIYs and recipes on AWFT, but once a month I head over to Becca’s blog to share a tasty treat. I’m back this month to share another delicious recipe that’s perfect for winter.

Sometimes you need something tasty and hot to warm you up, but you don’t want to leave the house. One of my favorite winter drinks is Starbuck’s white hot chocolate. If you’re a fan of creamy and decadent drinks, this one will not disappoint. It takes just a few minutes to make and tastes way better than any powdered hot chocolate mix.

White Hot Chocolate with Homemade Whipped Cream and Chocolate Shavings

For the White Hot Chocolate

  • 1 cup white chocolate chips

  • ½ cup heavy cream

  • 16 oz milk (I used skim)

  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract

  • For the Whipped Cream
    • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
    • 2 Tbsp sugar
    • ½ Tbsp vanilla extract

    For Chocolate Shavings
    • 1 solid dark chocolate candy bar
    • Lemon zester or a smaller grater

In a saucepan over medium-low heat, mix together white chocolate chips, milk, cream, and vanilla extract. Whisk constantly for about 6 to 8 minutes until everything is well combined and heated. Be careful not to use too much heat, or the milk will bubble over and scald quickly. When in doubt, always use lower heat.

When it’s ready, the white hot chocolate will begin to thicken and have a yellowish tint (from the vanilla extract) to it.

Distribute the hot chocolate in two cups and serve with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

    For the Whipped Cream

Combine the whipping cream, sugar, and vanilla extract in mixing bowl. Using the whisk attachment on your electric mixer, whisk the cream on high constantly for about 5 minutes, or until the cream begins to solidify and peaks begin to form.

    For the Chocolate Shavings

Creating the chocolate shavings is very easy. Find a good-quality chocolate bar, preferably dark chocolate. I haven't tried it with milk chocolate, but I’m concerned it would melt in your hands as you grate it.

Run the dark chocolate bar down a lemon zester or small grate to create the chocolate shavings.
This drink is so rich and smooth that it warms your whole body on a cold winter night.
