DIY Barnwood Walls & Beams & Catacombe San Sebastiano, Rome

This ancient church was built over top St Stephan’s Catacombs. πŸ’€ The catacombs buried ancient Romans & then Christian Saints who had been martyered in the coliseum. ✝️ It was also used as secret church for the early Christians who didn’t want to end up in the coliseum like their saints. ⛪️

The chapel is quite beautifully and uniquely decorated with the painted wood ceiling. But there’s also two gorgeous carved works by Bernini- my favorite is the bust of Jesus Christ.

Salvador Mundi or the bust of Christ by Bernini. This was Berninis last work and his favorite subject. You can see his love emanating from this block of marvel.

St Sebastian by Bernini. πŸ’œπŸ’š Saint Sebastian was martyred in ancient Rome- in an area that was an outdoor gymnasium. He was tied to a tree and shot with many arrows. πŸŒ³ πŸΉ He was first miraculously healed, but then was later clubbed to death. He was buried in the catacombs under this very church! πŸ’€ ✝️

Snuck one photo from the crypt below. The crypt is comprised of an ancient Roman section then it became the final resting place of the early Christian martyrs. It was even a church for the early Christians who had to meet in secret for the first three hundred years.
This week's project is so simple. Transforming brand new siding siding into beautiful barn wood.

Materials

DIRECTIONS

1.] Stain
For this project, we used 1x2 and 1x6 cedar, s4s. You will want to stain the red cedar with Weatherwood Reclamation stain. We strain the stain and then put the stain through our gravity sprayer and applied it to the wood in even coats. We apply a heavy coat of stain and let the wood air dry. Depending on the red cedar you have, the color result will be anything from brown to dark gray to gray and brown mixture, because the tannin in cedar varies so much. You can see it working below.

2.] Paint
The company wanted more variance so they decided to paint a few of the boards with a barn wood red. Any brand paint can be used overtop of the Weatherwood, so feel free to play around with it.
