Stripped and Stained Piano & a Trip to La Boca Veritas, Rome

We made it to Rome and our first day we strolled around our Trastavere AirBNB. One of the closest tourist stops is calledthe Mouth of Truth (Boca della Veritร s). Originally the disc’s from the temple of Hercules, but now people travel from all over the world ๐ŸŒŽ to put their hand in its mouth. The story goes, if the statue does NOT bite your hand, than you are true of heart! ๐Ÿ‘„๐Ÿ’– Somehow, we made it!

One of our favorite clients, Chelsea from Apple Blossom Way, created this ombre masterpiece and I thought we would enjoy the inspiration. She is ALWAYS sharing free paint and stain tutorials, so you will want to follow her for sure!

Materials

  • Unstained furniture piece (can be new wood or stripped.)
  • Sand paper and palm sander or chemical stripper
  • Brush
  • Chalk Paint- you pick color!

Directions

1.] STRIP: First you'll want to apply a thick layer of Citristrip to the table. Citristrip has a tendency to dry out before it can eat away at all the layers of stain and lacquer. So covering the wet stripper with a garbage bag helps keep the moisture in while it works.

2.] SCRAPE: When the stripper turns white, it's ready to be scraper off. Remove the bags and scrape as much of the mixture off, as you can. You'll want to try and get down to the raw wood if you can. But being careful not to scrape or damage the wood itself.

3.] CLEAN: You will want to wipe the table down with mineral spirits and a rag to remove any existing residue. This should remove any sticky residue from the tabletop.

4.] SAND: Use a palm sander and 80 grit sandpaper to make sure the wood is completely down to raw.

5.] STAIN: Select your Weatherwood stain colour from the color chart {link}, this was stained with Relamation Stain. Just brush or spray on product and allow it to air dry naturally. You can apply a second coat for darker shades.

6.] SEAL: We used Flat Varnish from Weatherwood to seal the wood. When you seal the wood, the color will lighten slightly. Be prepared, but isn't the effect just great?!
