DIY Rustic Pallet Art

Today I'm sharing this DIY Rustic Pallet Art project from my friend, Kristi, over at Making it in the Mountains. Kristi is a Canadian DIY blogger, who blogs the transformation of her formerly builder grade home, as she turns it into a custom one.
Kristi shares how to create your own custom wood art. I love this project because it's so versatile, you can customize it to any design you choose, and because it would fit the design for nearly any space.

 Materials

  • Raw wood, in this case pallet wood
  • Hammer and Nails or Liquid Nail
  • Vinyl stickers, Silhouette Cut Out
  • Wood Stain- Weatherwood Stain's Reclamation and/or paint

Directions

1] Kristi had some scrap 1x4 wood leftover from her son, Carson’s, plank wall. She used a cross brace to secure several planks of wood, to create these little pallets.

2] Kristi used her new Silhouette to create the darling shapes for her son's room. But you could purchase vinyl shapes, or cut out your own from shelf liner using a Xacto knife.

3] Use a rolling pin or vinyl scraper to ensure excellent adhesion between the wood and the vinyl. You want to make sure no stain or paint can seep beneath the adhesive. Apply a heavy coat of stain over the entire art piece. Allow the stain to penetrate the wood and dry naturally. Do not wipe off.

4] Once the stain is dry she peeled off the vinyl to reveal this darling train art.

To mix things up, Kristi created two more versions of the art.
She stained the entire boards for the next two pallets. On one, she placed a vinyl moose cut out and used chalk paint to lightly paint a relief of this cute moose art. For the third and final pallet, she placed vinyl over the Weatherwood stained wood, leaving the moose cut out in the center. Then she used chalk paint to fill in the little green moose art.

Her final step? Secure a photo hanger to the back to easily affix the pallets to the wall. Aren't they precious? I could see having little pallet art pieces mixed in with your gallery wall or maybe with your children's silhouette. Virtually anytime you need a blank canvas, it could work!

If you liked this darling pallet art, you're going to love Kristi's little boy's rustic room reveal. I don't know what's better, that rustic plank wall or the Ikea hack bookcase?!
I hope you'll stop by and show her some project love. FB  |  Insta  |  Tweet  | Pin
