Layering Reactive Stains: How To

Hey guys, it's finally getting chilly in Italy! I can't believe it will be Christmas in no time! They don't celebrate as much in Italy, as Easter is their giant holiday. I've also got a paint update for you guys! We are selecting our final shades for our new paint line launch, so keep your fingers crossed for me! This week's project shows you how easy it is to layer reactive stains!

Herringbone Reclaimed Oak Hack & Santuario Scala Santa, Rome

This was quite the experience! πŸ’œπŸ’™ According to Catholic tradition, these are the Holy Stairs from Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem. They are the stairs Jesus Christ stepped on his way to trial during his Passion. ✝️
The Stairs were brought to Rome by Saint Helena, or Emperor Constantine’s mother, in the fourth century.

Architectural Headboard in Smoked Oak & Santa Croce, Florence

I had to visit the famous old church called Santa Croce because my fav guy Michelangelo is buried there.🎨 But there was so, so much awesomeness happening!!

St Frances started this particular church ⛪️ & monastery for the Franciscan monks that follow him. The monks still have a leather shop here. πŸ‘œ πŸ’€

Weathered Gray Soffit & My G-Grandfather's Town

In the early 1900's, my wonderful great-grandfather immigrated from the beautiful mountainous town of Benevento, Italy. πŸ” This is not a tourist trap by and stretch, it''s about a hour and 15 minutes away from Naples, but we easily made the beautiful drive.

Achieve the Perfect Rustic Brown & Palace of Caserta

Today was just amazing! Caserta, Italy is the tiny town my great grandmother immigrated from. Touring Caserta Italy, I got to walk the streets my great-grandmother walked, when she was a child. It was like falling back thru time!

Rustic Mantel & Basilica di St Niccola in Bari, Italy

Yesterday we had the fabulous opportunity to check out Basilica di San Nicola- otherwise known as the tomb of St Nick- or Santa Claus. Did you know Santa was a legit person, a saint from 280 AD? I sort of did, but now I know it for a fact!

Stain Cabinetry like a Pro

We have spent most of the summer in Fresno, though that was not the original plan! It's been so sad to see the smoke filled air and know northern Cali is suffering. This project comes from Fresno - so i't's the perfect time to share it.  Now if you're like me, you would be skeptical to stain your own cabinets. But you can see my husband stained these while we were at a trade show!

Ammonia Smoked Wood - in 1 Safe Step!

Happy 4th of July to my American friends! We are celebrating in Florence, Oregon- running a 5K, hitting up the parade, and of course, fireworks! How about you?

Today's post is pretty exciting. See back in the day, Europeans started ammonia smoking their oak floors to get gorgeous wood floor shades that were impossible to achieve otherwise. People hardly do this anymore because ammonia smoking floors is super toxic and dangerous. Ammonia fumes can kill you and folks used to seal up their whole house to allow the fumes to interact with the tannin in the wood.

Rustic Restoration Table

Hey friends! This week we are in Eugene, Oregon. The northwest is finally warming up, guys! I am one happy camper. We live so much of our lives outside, traveling around the US like this, so the warm weather gives us our playground back. Back to projects! Yay! We launched a new wood stain color a while back, but I finally have some photos to share! This stain is Restoration and it  will turn most wood types a warm, rustic brown.

Rustic Wood Counter

Hey friends! We spent last week in Vancouver and can I just tell you, that city is gorgeous in the spring time! Have you been? We walked their Marine Walk and took a boat trip thru their harbor, saw the art museum, Fort Langley and did an architectural walking tour. the city was lovely and clean. But perhaps the highlight for this sweet tooth, Zack and I split the YUMMIEST desert, called "sugar pie."

Create & Hold White Washed Gray Cabinetry

Create & Hold White Washed Gray Cabinetry

I know what you're thinking, my cabinets are already painted so I'll never use this project. Stop right there, for one- this color can be used anywhere- on furniture or walls, etc. For two- big box stores, like Home Depot, sell unfinished, raw alder cabinets! This home sold for tens of millions and you can have this look very easily! You could get this VERY high-end look for a fraction of the cost.

Rustic Farmhouse Coffee Table

Things have been going better this week, our wonderful feline has made a recovery from his "event' last week. The vet thought it was a heart attack, although it still seemed more like a stroke based on symptoms. In either case, he's okay so far. We will be leaving Naples FL after Labor Day and it's been incredible. I've traveled all over the US and this has to be one of my favorite spots. We got to go to Sarasota Beach a week ago, only for a hour, but still, it's awesome. I haven't seen a beach packed like that since Waikiki.

DIY Restoration Hardware Gray Oak Finish

Today's project is sort of exciting, because before reactive stains we didn't have a way to create the Restoration Hardware finishes we love. Now in just a couple of steps, with minimal work, you can have the RH look in your home, and you don't have to spend $3K for one piece of furniture! So let's get to it, we are going to DIY the Restoration Hardware's Gray Oak Finish on oak, just like they do.

DIY Pottery Barn Reclaimed Parquet Table

I wanna know who watched, "Trading Spaces" back in the day? Do you guys remember that show? I used to absolutely loved it. I always envisioned being the designer and thought that would be so much fun! And could you imagine having a guy like Ty on hand to build you whatever it was you needed? Well, I'm toying around with an idea. I've been thinking about starting a Youtube channel featuring budget makeovers. I think it would be a great space to broadcast my coatings and try my hand at decorating for others. Of course I can't trade spaces with 2 homeowners, but I can redo your office or home. Especially if you're a doctor, dentist, or lawyer. Those offices always need work to get hip. Anyways, if you're in the Florida Keys area, and you have a $6,000 budget, email me.

Nautical Pedestal Table Strip & Stain

It's NEW YORK! Yes, my dear friends, this week the hubby and I are playing, I mean "working" in New York. Having grown up in Boston, you would think I would've spent considerable time in a huge metropolis only 4 hours away. Especially since I love history and theatre. But no, my fam pretty much stuck to Boston sites and when I turned 18, I booked it across the US and across the Pacific Ocean to go to college in Hawaii. This is the first real time I've spent in the city and we are
having a BLAST!

Awesome DIY Restoration Hardware Reclaimed Gray Oak Finish Tutorial and Video#fg2b

Have you seen Restoration Hardware's new-ish branch, RH Modern? It's the same gorgeous RH look, but with the clean lines of mid-century modern pieces. I found this bedroom with the perfect gray furniture and I had to see if I could replicate it.

[Restoration Hardware Hack] Faux Zinc MDF Table Makeover

If this piece of furniture {Baker's Rack Open Shelving} and this piece {Zinc Open Nightstand} fell crazy in love and had a little furniture baby, then it could look something like my side table makeover! Can you see it?

But let's start at the beginning- this is the 3rd update for our "Spring into Action" challenge. Remember my before pic- this side table in need of TLC. I almost tossed'em or yard saled the pair- since they were only 60 bucks brand spankin new and aren't even made of real wood! BUT the size and shape could work, and I needed the little drawers for living room storage- so I stayed with it.
Last week I let your know I had painted the tables black- using a DIY chalk paint formula. I used chalk paint so I could skip the prime step and skip right to the paint. And for the record chalk paint does have great adhesion to MDF, I was very pleased with it.
What I didn't show you- I took off the top of the table, to be replaced with some real wood!

To create a metallic look I started off using Jamie's {Freckled Laundry} tutorial-it's about the best tutorial I've ever seen. Jamie is so super duper talented.
I happen to have the right paint on hand to follow through her directions. I probably shouldn't have taken a pic with the freezer paper- it's really just a trick I use to keep the paint from soaking into the paper plate. So you can disregard it when/if you buy supplies.
Following the tutorial, you use a rag to blend three shades of silver, creating a slightly varied finish in color. Buuuut, I followed all 14 steps and wasn't that happy with my version-{*super sad face.} Though this was at no fault of the tute. More like I'm still working on my glazing skills. So I backtracked to step 5.

You can see from the pic- it's silvery and shiny from the paint. But I wanted a more reflective surface.

Then I used my old friend, Rub n Buff, to apply another level of sheen. I also used this to create imperfections in the finish and create depth. Look at how the furniture reflects light. I took this pic n an overcast day with the curtains closed, and still you can see the shine!
Here's a few close up shots so you can see the finish. I applied the Rub n Buff with a toothbrush, like I explain here. I used it in spots, making it thicker and thinner in areas to help recreate the look of metal.

I used cheap-ish preassembled pine wood and had it cut it to size. I decided to cut them the same size as the base, trying to modernize the traditional tables a bit. The wood cost me 20 bucks and would have been cheaper if I had decided to make my own with planks- probably costing $12-13. This time easy won, though!

Then I used a homemade stain made from vinegar and steel wool to age and stain the wood. {I describe it in depth at the bottom of this post.} The wood is warm with gray tones in it. It is a little more yellow than I'd like- but that's due to the polyurethane, not the stain.
I can't belive how many projects I've done in this room now! Things are finally starting to wind down in here a little bit. Looking around the room from left to right I made:
Last but not least- Z Gallerie Subway Art Knock Off  {on the left of the next pic}
I think things are starting to come together. Although I removed the previous {fake} medium brown wood tone side tables- there's still lots of dark wood in the room. You'll find ebony wood on- the feet of the couch, picture frames, and for the entertainment center. You can see the corner of it poking out on the left side of the pic.
And on the other side of the room, more dark wood found in the {yet-to-be-recovered}chair and mirror. It feels a lot calmer and cleaner to have just two-ish looks to the room. Of course the West Elm knock off tree stump table I made isn't an exact match for the new tabletops, since they're different woods- but since I used the same homemade stain, it is pretty similar.
That pretty much sums up the challenge- I can say I'm at peace with how the tables turned out. For about 25 bucks I don't have to stare at that red-toned "wood" ever again! Not bad for a 60 dollar Target table, huh?
I cannot wait to see how the other 11 participants fared in the challenge! Check'em out when you get a sec!
