✥ Reader Feature: Chic Anthro-esque Living Room ✥

Hey guys! I am off taking a mini vacation- and loving every minute of it! Z and I bought a new Jeep Wrangler, so we knew we needed to break it in properly- with some camping, fishing, boating and 4x4ing! A MUCH needed break, believe me!

But even though I am off having fun- that doesn't mean I have forgotten you all! Abbie from 5 Days 5 Ways agreed to share her cool space with you all today!
Abbie's blog is unique and fun- just like her. She has a theme for each day and I love the games she plays, like Thrifted or Grifted on Wardrobe Wednesdays. If you don't know what that is, then stop over and check it out. I look forward to each and every one- no lie! Another highlight- she has a party for Free-for-All Fridays. There's always a ton of great talent- so go link up your latest and greatest!

OK- now for the raddest living room. I think you guys will like this one... I know I do!
✧✧✧✧✧

Hey From Gardners 2 Bergers Readers! My husband and I built this home and Becca asked me to share our living room with you! Let’s start with a few before shots, shall we?
P1000441P1000507
The reason there are no “workers” in these shots is that we were the workers! We built our entire house from the ground up (and by “we,” I mostly mean my amazing husband).
P1000639
This is a shot from right before we moved in…or maybe we already had. Either way, finishing up a house (ha! as if it’s finished now) with two (at that time) toddlers running around was quite the pain in the tushy adventure!
P1010993-1-1
I nabbed these pics from a before/after email I sent someone, so you can just ignore the text (or, if you want, you can make a game out of trying to decipher it by holding your hands around your eyes like binoculars and squinting…maybe a magnifying glass will work…just don’t burn a hole in your screen).
The last shot is the closest to what our living room looked like for about a year out of the two that we’ve lived in our house. The one difference (and it’s big) is that, right before I took these shots, we had two full-sized couches—one where the loveseat is and one where the open space in the foreground is—in the living room. But we sold them on craigslist within 6 hours of posting them (they were either really great couches or I priced them too low…oh well), and I was in such a tizzy that I forgot to take pictures of the before (the color on the walls was Benjamin Moore’s Sunrise, in case you were wondering).
And now for the after:
IMG_5925-2
The paint color is Sherwin Williams Sea Salt. I made the tufted ottoman from a $40 craigslist coffee table (tutorial included in that link). The TV console is a vintage find from a local barn sale.
I’ll also go ahead and answer the most commonly asked question I’ve gotten since first posting any pics of my living room before you even get it out of your fingers and into the comment box: I got the rug two years ago on Ebay. It’s the Pottery Barn Moorish Tile rug (color: Clementine), and it was pretty much sold out when I bought it.
Yeah, I know. It doesn’t do much good for me to tell you where I got something if they don’t have it anymore. I did find this alternative, though. Not exactly the same, but similar. And I’m pretty sure Overstock has some similar options as well.
IMG_5888
This is a view from the opposite direction. I got that bench at Hobby Lobby a couple of years back because I loved it with a passion true and deep and it was 66% off. I remember that I brought it home on the same day as all our carpet (we don’t have much carpet in our house, so it all fit in the back of my dad’s big truck).
The day started out sunny and fine, but pretty much as soon as I got the carpet/bench loaded, a torrential downpour started and lasted the en-tire 45 minute, gear-stick grinding drive home. At the time, it was miserable. After months of hardly a drop of rain, I’d do the whole white-knuckled ordeal all over again if it would guarantee another gully-washer like that. Too bad we don’t need any more carpet.
IMG_5881
I found the mirror at Goodwill for $10, then primed and painted it black.
IMG_5879
I cut and stacked 2” foam to make the bench cushion and then covered it with some polka-dot fabric I found at Walmart. The pillows are from Walmart (they still have the gathered button pillow) and Target (the cream pom-pom pillow, which they currently carry).
IMG_5876
I’m a huge fan of Moravian star pendants but I just about choke on my own saliva every time I look up the prices. So when I found that Pier 1 alternative on sale for $10, I did a happy dance all the way to store (which burned a lot of calories considering that the closest Pier 1 is 30 miles away—see? Move-it Monday references all over the place, I tell ya) and waltzed away with my very own knockoff star…tealight holder (there’s a reason it’s 1/17 of the cost, folks).
IMG_5957
It’s really pretty at night.
IMG_5790
I got the Mitchell chairs from Target for $99 on sale (it’s still on) + free shipping—not too shabby considering that they are well-made, comfy, and cute as a polka-dotted baby bug’s ear.
IMG_5899
Oh! And meet Geoffrey, the giraffe. My mom bought him for me, and I love him!
IMG_5792IMG_5799
In case you didn’t read Friday’s wall feature, the chubby bird is from Hobby Lobby (4 months ago or so), and the teensy birdcage which only wishes it could house a bird that substantial was free from Goodwill (the lady held it up and said, “I’ll just throw it in with the rest since you’re such a good customer.” : )).
IMG_5910
This is a view of the shelf that wraps around from our kitchen cabinets (which are the same deep teal color). The books are from Barnes and Noble’s leather-bound classics collection, and I bought all ten of them together (including the complete works of Jane Austen, Shakespeare, Sherlock Holmes, and The Chronicles of Narnia, among others) here. Almost everything else, including the Van Gogh print, is from Goodwill.
IMG_5982
The sofa table vignette, complete with yet another Jones Design print.
IMG_5982-1
The sofa table holds some of my favorite pictures of Shaun and me. That’s a picture of our first kiss (which took place at our wedding…no, I’m not making that up…have I mentioned he’s ah-mazing?).

IMG_5968
This one is at my 22nd birthday party, a few days after Shaun proposed (on my actual birthday…I’ll have to tell that story someday. He did gooooooood). It was a swing-dance complete with lessons, dancing, and costumes!
IMG_5970
A funky little storage box from Goodwill ($2) with some snapshots of Simon, my easygoing, snuggly middle child. He has dimples so deep you could happily get lost in them (and I have a feeling many girls will someday…oh dear).
The lamp is another vintage Goodwill find ($7). It’s ginormous (at least three feet tall)! The shade is from Target from a couple of months back.

IMG_5933
I saw a room once on Houzz (if you haven’t checked it out, I suggest you do!) that had a built-in shelf on the wall much like this one, and Shaun replicated it for me.
IMG_5972
I love this little chair from Goodwill. Fortunately, none of my children has tried to sit on it yet.
IMG_5983
More Goodwill (Amazing Grace letters), some Walmart (the silver mirror), and the star mirror is a find from the same barn sale I mentioned earlier.

IMG_5973
I bought these beautiful books for a $1 each at a garage sale. I tried to get the lady to come down on the price, but she almost cried, and I felt terrible for asking. : \ I also covered some paperbacks with pretty scrapbook paper.

IMG_5976
More Goodwill (goose, candle), Marshall’s (vase, which isn’t actually pink but turned that way from the fuchsia flowers…weird). The black and glass hurricane vase is a gift, and I think I stole the lantern from my mom (Hi, Mom!).
IMG_5948
A view of the “other couch” (which is how I actually think of it since it doesn’t have the pretty Target flower pillow or the sofa table). The pillows are a collection of ones that came with the couches (the brand is Corinthian), Marhall’s, Goodwill, and made-by-moi.
IMG_5941
I spent about 8 hours painting my French doors using Jones Design’s painted wallpaper method. I just shrank my template to scale for a door instead of an entire wall (the color on the door is Sherwin Williams Quietude, and the stenciling is done in blend of white/ivory craft paints that I mixed up).
IMG_5964
The dish is a Goodwill find that you can see up close on last weeks 5 Things Thursday. The bowl is from Anthro, and I bought the side table from my bestie and then added a Hobby Lobby flower knob. The mat is from Hobby Lobby.
IMG_5949
Another shot toward the backyard (sorry about the low light, it was getting late).
Finally, I have a question for you. It’s super-important. Are you ready?
If you read about my undecoratable wall (and elves!), you know that I had a Dickens of a time figuring out what to do with the space behind the TV (options considered included an eclectic gallery wall, my Love Letters banner, which, as you can see, did get incorporated when I decided to frame the letters instead, and anything else involving art, picture frames, and other decorative doodads that possibly could be considered in an 8 hour time-frame). I finally had a brainstorm when I dug those matching white shelves out of a forgotten pile in a closet, but what I really want to know is…
Do you prefer this version:
IMG_5790
or this one:
IMG_5945-1
And did you even notice the difference (other than picture quality; I know, the first one’s better)?
Here’s a close-up of what I added:
IMG_5987
So…whaddya think?
Okay, I’m starving, my children are really tired of Mama being on the computer (they need me to build a hill in their car-track), and the baby has discovered the stairs in a major way, so I’d better head back to real life now.
I hope you enjoyed seeing some of my home.I hope you'll stop by sometime!

 ✧✧✧✧✧
Isn't Abbie's home just loaded with detail and charm?  I love the mixture of patterns and colors, some unexpected combos that just work. That's something that can be hard to pull off.

✥ Reader Feature: Rad Vintage-Meets-Modern Home ✥

You will not believe who agreed to write a post for you guys today... Cassie from Primitive and Proper!! Are you guys as excited as I am?!?

Cassie's dining room was my first introduction to her oh-so-fabulous blog. Since then I have been shocked and amazed, week after week, by her creative and stylish projects. I think Cassie has {at least} two major talents that knock my socks off.
{one} She is one of the greatest social bloggers out there. Like I bet you guys already know who she is- and- if she has been to your blog, then she has left you an awesome, heart-felt comment. I am in awe of this amazing ability to make a zillion strangers feel like friends.
{two} Nobody knows color like Cassie knows color- case in point, that dining room pic that I just shared. This girl knows how to mix and match shades, week after week she shares her freakin fabulous furniture makeovers- I mean for example check out these dresser redos!
OK- here's Cassie...
✧✧✧✧✧

Hello there!  I am Cassie from Primitive and Proper, and I am so excited to be here today on Becca's fabulous blog!  She is so talented and creative, and I am beyond flattered that she asked me to share my living room and dining room with you today.

We moved into our "new to us" home last October.  For me, this home was love at first sight.  It's a Cape Cod style home, which I had always dreamed of.  And it sits up on a hill out in the country.  It was not love at first sight for my husband however, and it took him round two to agree with me. :)  I don't know if he saw the potential I saw in this 1979 house that was stuck in, well, 1979.

I have been trucking my way through- anything that can be bettered with paint, is getting the Cassie treatment!  The very first project I tackled in the house was the mantle in the living room.  Here is a picture from the week we moved in to show you what I was working with...

I painted brick and the wood mantle in Martha Stewart's Zinc.  Also, this was the only room that had any painted trim- I finished the job by painting the baseboards as well.

The first purchase we made were two cove gray Henry sofas from West Elm, and I had painted some tables to used as a coffee table before we moved in.  Since moving in we have added so many other elements to the room.  I have found a couple of pieces of furniture from craigslist, like the bookcases that I painted gray with an orange backing, and the desk I painted coral.  We have purchased a new rug (after the first one was peed on by my dog!), and I have made some pillows, bought a couple, and even won one in a giveaway!  And we have added a gallery wall of some fun family memories.

Ok, enough boring you with talk, let's check out some pictures!  Here is the room today....

On the other side of the entry to the room sit the bookcases.  This picture is actually from the fall so pardon the smidgen of zebra rug you see because that was the peed on ruined rug that now lives in our playroom.

The two front rooms of our home are the living room and the dining room, with just the front door and a small hallway in between, so each room has a view into the other.  For that reason, I wanted to stick to a similar palette.

Here is where we started in the dining room....

In the dining room, I painted the trim, and painted the room white, with gray and white stripes under the chair rail.  I also found a sideboard on craigslist and painted that aqua.  I had a smaller server that was not working for us anymore, so I made it into a bar cart.  And recently I brought in some color with the addition of some coral painted chairs.  The white chairs and table came with us from our last house.

Here is where we are today in the dining room...

The best part about both of these rooms, however, is nothing that I have created.  Here you can see the view out from my desk...

Both of these rooms have large windows with amazing views!  In the Fall we get to enjoy the leaves turning, and in the winter see the snow fall, and now we are watching Spring evolve.  The living room also has the best view for amazing sunsets.

I have really been enjoying making our house into our home, but it certainly felt like home from day one to me.  We definitely have landed where we are supposed to be.

Becca, thank you so much for having me here today to share a little bit of my home with your readers!  I hope you will pop over to Primitive and Proper and say hi!
✧✧✧✧✧

Ree-diculous, right!? I love that coral color she just added to both spaces! There are so many special touches to each room. Honestly, at least one time each week I pin a piece of furniture or a color of paint she's used!
The last couple of weeks Cassie has shared room reveals for both her daughter and her son.
I lurve her son's Star Wars themed room and pinned that sucker in a second flat.
Are you kidding me with that galaxy wall? Great idea- and great execution. Check out the rest of the post to get all the juicy details.

And this magical space for her little girl's "woodland" room! It is definitely a creative space for a little mind to play and imagine! If you love whimsy- this is the post for you! It is jammed packed with unique and creative touches- let me tell you, you wanna this!

Thanks, Cassie, for coming over today! And thanks to you guys for stoppin by!

✥ Reader Feature: Boy's Vintage Airplane Room ✥

I hope you all had fabulous weekends!
I think we're on a bedroom spree over here. We had a super romantic adult retreat last week, and before that we showcased the awesomely stylish  tween bedroom.

Well today we get to see a super rad boy's room! I know you will love it- and you'll adore Kim, the gal who runs the show over at Too Much Time on my Hands!! I love her take on a airplane inspired bedroom, and just wait until you see the Anthro inspired dresser she refinished. I would put it in MY room!! Love.

✧✧✧✧✧
Hey there From Gardners 2 Bergers readers! My name is Kim and I am running the house over at Too Much Time on My Hands.
I do lots of crafty decorating and creating, some cooking, lots of upcycling, just a big smorgasbord of fun and excitement.
I also host a linky party that starts every Friday evening and lasts through the weekend.
I am here today to show you my son's vintagey airplane bedroom redo.
Done!
Finally!
I am tired!

This is the view into the room from the hallway. The map wreath found a home on the door.
This is the long wall across from the door and the closet. I really do love the headboard.
Like the paper airplane I painted on the wall? The trail is electrical tape! Found the idea here in this unbelievable bedroom.
There is the luggage tag lamp, which I decided to paint black,
and my reclaimed fence turned into wall art.
Got the clip boards for $1.99 each at Target. Then, I printed some images from Graphics Fairy and displayed my fun telegram announcing Everett's birth. Buy your own here.
The kids found a big branch on a walk with dad and it was the perfect size to use as a curtain rod.
The curtains are cloth drop cloths which I just cut off at the bottom and attached with shower curtain rings. Total project was $14.99, including the curtains, rings and brackets to hold the stick.
I think the dresser is my favorite piece in the room.
I made a copycat Ballard board to display some sentimental items. The "Happy Journeys" block print was made by the Everett my Everett is named after.
Here is a ski pass his godfather made for him when he was 1 week old!
I got my big airplane from Hobby Lobby and made little wooden discs with vintage images to hang above the closet.
I am just in love with the room and how it turned out. I spent next to nothing on it....I didn't save receipts or anything, but my guess is under $100.
This was a really big project and now that it is done, I am looking around and wondering, "hmmmm, what next?
P.S. The paint was from WalMart...believe it or not it went on easily and covered great! The color is Cinder Pebble Gray

✧✧✧✧✧
Great right? I love the rustic, vintage feel and freaking die over those DIY projects!!
You guys will fall in love with Kim's blog- it's a lot like mine- except she totally ROCKS projects. She has a ton of crafts projects, like this Pottery Barn Typewriter art knock off.

There's super rad DIY's- I mean look at this framed, tufted headboard, it's made from an old fence!

And I die for this dresser!! It only cost her 16 bucks and just look at the after pic!!

Kim also has tutorials {I told you her blog was like mine!} Look at this super amazing Pottery Barn knock off clock. I love the rustic wood!

I hope you get a chance to stop by, and tell her I sent you!
I'll be back Thursday with my final reveal for the Spring Into Action project!! Eeee!

[PS] I feature YOU GUYS  {my readers} every Monday! Do you have a room makeover- or maybe have a home tour you'd like to share?
