Maple Desk and Built-Ins

Weatherwood stains are a great choice for maple! It stains up to be the perfect grey and you can still see the wood grain! You will find maple for cabinets and floors because it's such a hard wood. That's why we choose it for this project and you'll love how easy it was to do!

Recipe for Perfect Gray/Brown Hardwoods

Maple floors are less common now, because maple doesn't take traditional wood stains very well. But they were very common back in the day. You will find old maple floors, with these skinny 2" boards all over in old homes, especially in the east and mid-west. Staining maple is not a problem with our products, as you can see. Just apply stains and let them air dry! So this is a great project for your old maple flooring, to update it and bring it into the 21st century! Not to mention, this is the easiest way to stain your own flooring. Let's get to it!

Restoration Hardware's "Natural" Color

Let's get to this awesome project. It's my favorite kind of post! Where usually hard to achieve colors are a piece of cake! The inspiration comes from Restoration Harware's "natural" color.  This look is easy to achieve and it's just a subtle aging.

Faux Barnwood Garage Doors

If you're lucky enough to have wood garage doors, this is right up your alley. But the tutorial will also work well for any wood on which you're trying to get this color! These garage doors are cedar and once they were stained, they looked legit like barn wood. Check it out:

Easy Brown/Gray Floors & Palazza Vecchio

We are staying at the best location in Florence! We are a 5 minute walk from the famous Santa Maria Fiore and Palazza Vecchio is right outside our door. The palazza has near continuous free weekend concerts and is always filled with people and street performers. It is so much fun. We are so close we just listen for the music and head down tot palazza to enjoy the performance.

The other day we walked outside and there was a large parade with women dressed in incredible gowns, flag throwers, and military. 🇮🇹  I have absolutely no idea what we were celebrating but it was a blast. The parade closed with a real wolf being walked through the streets! 🐺

Herringbone Reclaimed Oak Hack & Santuario Scala Santa, Rome

This was quite the experience! 💜💙 According to Catholic tradition, these are the Holy Stairs from Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem. They are the stairs Jesus Christ stepped on his way to trial during his Passion. ✝️
The Stairs were brought to Rome by Saint Helena, or Emperor Constantine’s mother, in the fourth century.

Reclaimed-Looking Beams & Tre Fontane Abbey, Rome

The Apostle St Paul was imprisoned several times on his journey from Israel to Rome to await justice for preaching the "Good News" or the gospel of Christ. This was his final prison and he was beheaded in this small spot between an abbey and a (now) church. 👼🏻

DIY Barnwood Walls & Beams & Catacombe San Sebastiano, Rome

This ancient church was built over top St Stephan’s Catacombs. 💀 The catacombs buried ancient Romans & then Christian Saints who had been martyered in the coliseum. ✝️ It was also used as secret church for the early Christians who didn’t want to end up in the coliseum like their saints. ⛪️

DIY Reclaimed Pine Floors & Our Florence Neighborhood

Hey friends! Florence is finally warming up and I thought it was the perfect time to show you our neighborhood. This is the intersection our AIRBNB is on. You can see we live in the middle of the tourist district, so basically we're in a mall. The buildings are mostly sienna coloured plaster and grey stone. The streets in Florence are alive with the sounds of street performers and always smell like (Italian) food. Note, there is no Italian food in Italy. It's all just "food"! ;)Each week we've been here the crowds have grown and it can sometimes take 10 extra minutes to navigate these streets. We don't have a car here, though we rent them from time to time. So everything we do is "a piedi" on on foot.

Quick Oak Shelf Makeover & Montepulciano. IT (New Moon Filming Site)

Montepulciano! If you’re a twilight fan, this is where New Moon was filmed. 🧛‍♂️ 👧 The midevil town is tucked in the Tuscany hills so you drive up these tight, winding switchbacks on these narrow ancient streets.

Rustic Cedar Beams & Roman Baths

Had fun with my favorite guy at the Baths of Diocletian. 🛁 Romans baths consisted of 4 stages. You would start with a (slave) massage 💆, then the hottest bath (with heated floors 😱), then two more progressively cooler baths. 😓

Weathered Gray Soffit & My G-Grandfather's Town

In the early 1900's, my wonderful great-grandfather immigrated from the beautiful mountainous town of Benevento, Italy. 🏔 This is not a tourist trap by and stretch, it''s about a hour and 15 minutes away from Naples, but we easily made the beautiful drive.

Achieve the Perfect Rustic Brown & Palace of Caserta

Today was just amazing! Caserta, Italy is the tiny town my great grandmother immigrated from. Touring Caserta Italy, I got to walk the streets my great-grandmother walked, when she was a child. It was like falling back thru time!

Dreamy Wood Ceiling & The Sistine Chapel, Vatican City

Now that we are in Rome, the art and architecture is coming hot and heavy. For example, we've spent several afternoons in the ginormous Vatican museum, which is a total dream for me. If you haven’t been to the Sistine Chapel, I can share my impressions. You enter and you’re taken aback by just how much is happening — all the walls and every inch of ceiling is covered in frescos.

Weathered Beams & Apostle St. Andrew in Amalfi Coast

The incredible final resting place of the Apostle Andrew, in the tiny town of Amalfi on the Amalfi Coast. Duomo Di Amalfi towers above the small Amalfi square. You can see the duomo dwarfs the rest of the square, looking up these grand squares. This footage is mostly from the upper portion of the duomo, which was built in 900 AD!

EASY Barnwood Wall & Pompeii ART

We took around 1000 photos of Pompeii. I was shocked at the size of it, reading about the city in history books, you cannot comprehend the scale. The ruins are 80 hectares and it took us four days to explore everything. The customer services gals said most Americans get 2-3 hours there.
