DIY Stained Glass Ornaments
[Transparent & Opaque]

Christmas is here, bringing good cheer! Merry... Merry... Merry Christmas! I've been making myself merry by staining my own christmas ornaments. I'm not sure if many of you know how to stain glass bulbs, but these are quite easy to do. I wanted something to match my color scheme or blues and greens, which isn't always the easiest to find. That's why the DIY ornament is a perfect solution.

I made these DIY stained glass ornaments and, in less than 30 minutes, I had an ornament to match my color scheme. In fact, you could pretty much match any color scheme with this same technique.

I followed an amazing tutorial from my girl, Kim at Sand and Sisal, and used Mod Podge to create this look in the above pic. I found it created an opaque glass globe.

I've heard Elmer's Glue can be substituted for Mod Podge, so in an experiment, I followed the same tutorial using Elmer's Glue instead. I found the ornament turned out as a blue, transparent look. I love how you can see right through this version, although I had trouble stopping streaks on this one.

The opaque ornament laying down is from Mod Podge, while the transparent hanging ornament is from Elmer's Glue. Either look you choose, the tutorial is the same.

Materials:

  • Elmer's Glue or Mod Podge
  • Food Coloring
  • Oven
  • Clear, Glass Bulb Ornaments

Directions:

  • You can use either Mod Podge or Elmer's Glue, depending on the look you are wanting.
    • Opaque Ornament = Use Mod Podge
    • Transparent Ornament = Elmer's Glue
  • Use the awesome tutorial from from Sand and Sisal. I followed hers to the tee- with the exception of trying Elmer's Glue, too.

I used 5-6 drops of food coloring in each ornament, adding 2 blue + 3 green in a few and the opposite, 3 blue + 2 green in others. This gave me a mix of turquoise and sea green ornaments.

Here's a few of my favorite ornaments from last year.

I love Pottery barn, but it's a fun challenge to see if I can DIY their awesomeness!
Here's my Pottery Barn Inspired, DIY Globe Ornament! All you need is an ornament, a marker and some glitter.

Who hearts Anthropologie and their amazingly beautiful products? I love a challenge and tried my hand at their Chevron Ornament! I've actually made several of these. They're fun and easy, and add some glam for a tree.

If you are looking for some good bulbs, these are really easy to make. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
